Summer travel season is here! I am so thankful to live in a state where the sun and waves are a mere road trip away and by the time Friday comes, I am hop in the car and head north. Mondays, however, inevitably come and with them the bloated feeling of spending hours in the car retaining water. This is where turmeric comes into play! A spice that is commonly found in Asian and Indian cuisine, turmeric is bursting with flavor and offers properties that detox the body in a natural and healthy way. By flushing the body of excess water, turmeric not only reduces noticeable bloating, but aids in reducing inflammation on a cellular level as well. This mechanism is invaluable as inflammation is at the root of many chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer…the list goes on!
I would recommend consuming turmeric in your diet naturally opposed to seeking a pill supplement. Turmeric looses some of its healing properties when exposed to heat, so I commonly incorporate it into my diet by sprinkling it on roasted vegetables, chicken stir fry, or fish once the dish is already cooked and removed from the stove top. My favorite way to get my daily dose of turmeric is by drinking a cup of turmeric tea in the morning before breakfast. Don’t knock it till you try it! Sweet and slightly spicy, my favorite brand (insert here) leaves me feeling light, clean, and ready to tackle my Mondays.
