Health Benefits of Coffee

September 13, 2017

Mornings are rolling in with the chilly nip of autumn weather making that steaming cup of coffee all the more necessary to begin the day with a boost of energy and comfort. Caffeine, the beloved ingredient that gives coffee its magical power is well known for its ability to increase awareness, however, studies are proving that it also aids in weight management. The mechanism of action is the increase of thermogenesis and fat oxidation, which translates to: caffeine can increase metabolism!

The natural question to ask here is: how come the majority of the US population is addicted to Starbucks and we are still seeing an overall decrease in metabolic rates? The reason is that coffee is commonly consumed in the form of high calorie beverages rich in fats and sugars (PSL anyone?). No worries, there are many ways to enjoy a delicious cup of flavored, creamy coffee without the use of processed creamers. Spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, or pumpkin pie spice sprinkled on top of your steaming brew with a dash (or three) of unsweetened almond milk will give you all of the delicious benefits of coffee without the unwanted calories. For the mocha lovers out there, try mixing a little bit of cocoa powder in with your coffee grounds before you set your pot to brew – I promise you will not be disappointed!

A word of caution with caffeine: avoid overconsumption – more than 400mg of caffeine per day can cause you to feel jittery or anxious. Plus, the more caffeine you consume, you can become immune to its beneficial effects so it is best to enjoy caffeinated coffee in moderate doses.
